Where to start with car workshop equipment?
There is no such thing as a closed and complete list of tools. Here we can safely assume that the appetite grows with eating (literally), and with the expansion of the website there are new things that “could” be useful. Therefore – in this article we will try to describe a few products that must be taken into account when completing the workshop equipment.
Below are the most important tools that are worth having in your car workshop
two-column car lift
workshop crane
box lift
oil sucker (alternatively oil drainer)
tool cabinets
workshop washers
workshop press
McPherson spring puller
Two-column workshop lifts – how to choose?
It is hard to imagine any more advanced work in the workshop without a lift. Well, how do you do anything more advanced than work from the top of the engine?
You can’t change anything in the suspension.
Not so much from below.
A two-column lift is an absolute must for any service. We have already written several times about how to choose a two-column lift or which mounting for a two-column lift to choose. If you want to find out, here are links to each of these articles:
what a two-column lift,
automatic or semi-automatic two-column lift,
installation of a two-column lift,
what is the height of the garage for the lift.
Here are some of the most important rules to help you choose the perfect 2-post lift for your workshop
Lifting capacity – Specify what cars you most often make – passenger cars? Vans? Or low-slung? This determines what capacity of a 2-post lift you should choose to equip your car workshop.
The screed – or the thickness of the floor – which is where you would like to place the lift – this will allow you to determine whether you need a lift with or without a frame.
Automatic or semi-automatic – Low price or ease of use more important? Choose a lift accordingly.
Workshop crane – which one to choose?
What to look for when choosing a workshop crane? First of all – for its lifting capacity. Most of this type of devices on the market has a lifting capacity of about 2000 kg (2 tons). This value will allow you to easily lift the engines of most popular cars on the Polish market.
Does the crane have a block/balancer?
This is an element that will make it much easier for you to reassemble an element such as a gearbox or engine. The balancer will allow you to position the heavy part – set it at the right angle or place it easily in the car.
How to choose a gearbox lift?
The first issue – its lifting capacity. The bigger it is, the more gearboxes you’ll be able to handle with it.
Another thing – the ending (head). As standard, most gearbox jacks have a four-tooth basket – the so-called spider. It will grab most crates, but from the feedback we receive from you, we know that it is worth to equip the lift with such an adapter

Car workshop equipment
It will greatly facilitate the maneuvering of the transmission itself.
Oil sucker or sinker
The eternal dilemma – change the oil using the traditional method? or with a suction cup?
We write more about these devices here:
However, if you prefer to change the oil using the traditional (gravity) method, a zlewka and weaving machine may come in handy. Even as a reservoir for overworked lubricant. Simply – you put it in the same way as an oil pan under the car chassis, wait until all the oil leaks out of the pan.
Won’t the oil spill?
Such sinks have a special bowl. The sieve placed in it prevents the oil from splashing sideways – so there is no risk of any leakage or dirt in the garage floor.
Tool cabinets
A workshop trolley is simply an absolute must when repairing cars. Well, imagine the situation – the car is hanging on the lift. But you suddenly realize that you are missing a tool.
You no longer have to run after small extensions or other screws. Having a workshop trolley, you can always move it exactly where you need it.
Workshop trolley with equipment. Or without?
What is better to choose? Will a fully equipped workshop cabinet be better? Or maybe it’s better to buy an empty piece of furniture and fill it yourself with the tools necessary for work? Let’s think!
Workshop trolleys with equipment
Take, for example, the REDATS 196-element workshop trolley. What will you find inside it? It is equipped with 7 drawers that have:
sockets, extensions, joints, knobs, ratchets
screwdrivers (flat and cross)
pliers
cutters
hammers
balls
tapes
Workshop press – how to choose?
What should be considered when choosing a workshop press? Here are some factors:
type of drive (hand, foot, hydraulic-pneumatic)
press pressure
construction
Below we describe in more detail all the factors that you need to know.
Drive type
Which one will be the best? Presses equipped with a hand pump have a special hand lever. It is this lever that allows you to control the actuator of the device.
There are also devices on the market that have a foot drive. What does it mean? The actuator can be operated not only with a hand pump, but also with a special foot pedal. Thanks to this, you do not need to use your hands to adjust the actuator.
The most advanced are presses with hydraulic-pneumatic drive. There is both a hand pump, as well as the possibility of connecting to a compressor.
Press pressure
One of the basic factors determining the models of presses is the pressure value of the device. The most popular are balers with the following lifting capacities:
10 tons
20 tons
30 tons
What value will be best for you? It all depends on what elements you will most often work with. If it is to be the only device in your workshop, it is best to choose a press with the highest pressure value. If you buy an auxiliary press (another one you will have in your workshop), it may have a slightly lower pressure value.
Press construction – what kind?
You can often hear the opinion that it is much better to choose a welded press than a bolted one. Welds are unlikely to break under pressure, so supposedly working with such devices is safer. This is true, but before we reject screw devices, it is worth finding out what screws are used in it.
Particularly important are the screws used in elements directly exposed to pressure resulting from the pressure radiating from the element that we are processing:
bar
post
beams/li>
In these elements, strength bolts, for example 8.8, should be used. It is worth checking this at the stage of choosing a specific model.
On the other hand, the brackets mounted in the press feet may have slightly weaker bolts – for example, 4.6
The meaning of these markings is given below:
the first digit is the ultimate tensile strength. In this case, it is 8 x 100 MPa = 800 MPa
the second digit is the value of the yield strength in relation to the tensile strength. It is calculated as follows: 8 x 0.1 x 800 MPa = 640 MPa.
